{design details: space saving banquette}

I love the idea of seating in the kitchen, and I am not talking about balancing on a stool were your feet don’t touch the floor. I am talking about a cozy place, at ground level to start and end your day. When space is tight and there’s no room for a dining room table and chairs, a banquette should do the trick.

In this uptown New York apartment (where better to look for space saving tricks?), designer  Steven Gambrel made the most of limited space, cozy-ing up into a corner with an L-shaped banquette positioned near floor to ceiling cabinets housing wine cubbies, a TV and additional closed storage.

The city-sleek table and chairs provide a modern, stylish mid-century statement. A picture window and touch of blue pull your eye out to the bustling city beyond. The banquette has practical wipeable cushions and additional storage below for good measure. Don’t forget to add artwork – I would suggest going big and bold – it will balance the height of the cabinets.

Do you love the look of banquette seating? Want to use it in your own narrow space?
